ALEJANDRO BERNAL RUEDA
Alejandro Bernal (Bogotá, 1981) is a documentary director based in Mexico City. For over fifteen years, he has worked across Latin America creating character-driven stories that move between the intimate and the political, often exploring themes of conflict, migration, and social change.
His work combines a cinematic approach with strong editorial storytelling, following real lives in complex environments with both visual sensitivity and narrative rigor. He has directed documentaries and docu-follow series for platforms and broadcasters such as VIX+, Al Jazeera English, Telemundo, Univision, YouTube, Spotify, Discovery Channel, ARTE, and Channel 4.
Throughout his career, he has developed a versatile practice that moves beyond investigative and issue-driven documentaries into entertainment formats, including the docu-reality series Santos Bravos and the documentary series Detrás de Dual, expanding his storytelling to broader audiences.
In 2017, he received an Emmy Award for Amazon: Paradise for Sale, and more recently won the Rory Peck Award for In Enemy Territory, produced for Witness / Al Jazeera English. His feature film Amor Rebelde premiered at Hot Docs 2021 and was later released theatrically in Mexico and Colombia.
He is currently in post-production on his third feature documentary, Linda.
